Deciphering the many 'MILKS'
ACTUAL MILK:
I'm talking real OG dairy milk. Inflammatory? Yes, for some, however nut milks can be just as bad. The 2 main reasons people have issues with dairy is due to Lactose & Casein.
CASEIN - generally the main issue with dairy. A1 casein can stimulate the immune system to create inflammation AND reduces production of glutathione (greatest antioxidant & anti-inflammation molecule). Again this is only an issue for some - if you struggle with arthritis, auto-immune disease, acne, PMS, histamine intolerance …. Best to avoid
LACTOSE - many people lack the enzyme lactase required to properly digest lactose = bloating, gas, diarrhoea - how quickly (or not) you run to the bathroom after consuming dairy will likely join the dots for you on this one.
OPT FOR: Organic full cream, meredith sheep/goat milk.
NUT MILK:
I might rock the boat here but these can be just as inflammatory as dairy milk. Here’s why --> if you're ordering an almond FW from your local coffee shop each morning take a look what's in common barista nut milks seed oils, sugars & thickeners = inflammation
HOWEVER - a good quality homemade or store bought unsweetened almond/cashew milk is great - especially for those with acne, immune conditions or lactose intolerance.
OPT FOR: Nutty Bruce Unsweetened Almond/Cashew/Coconut
SOY MILK:
Soy milk can be a good alternative. Soy is what we call a phytoestrogen. This means it has ANTI-estrogenic effects by blocking estradiol (main estrogen) which can be beneficial for some people (e.g. heavy periods)
BUT if you have thyroid issues, try to avoid soy as it can inhibit the uptake of iodine which the thyroid needs to make thyroid hormones and function properly.
OAT MILK:
This would be the last on my list of milks...
With an incredibly high glycemic index (GI), oat milk causes a rapid increase in blood sugar levels which will inevitably send you crashing down (= afternoon fatigue) & craving for another sugary hit (hello cravings).
